Free Flight and Computer Aided Design

As I said before, CAD programs are not everyone's cup of tea. But if you already use CAD for work or study, it is a logical step to design your free flight models using the same technology.

Some may see this as overkill, since any free flight model can be sketched up on a sheet of butcher's paper with a pencil and a ruler. However, it can also be said that the effort of producing a neat CAD free flight plan brings its own kind of satisfaction.

Below are links to sources of free CAD programs which you can download from websites. I should point out that if you are using a modem connection to the internet, these files are very large, and may take a considerable time to download. A 14MB file may take up to 4.5 hours to download over a 50K modem line!

Free CAD Software!

Here are 2 very useful CAD programs which you can download for free from the web:

TurboCAD

The free download is is a "lite" version of TurboCAD so it doesn't have all the features - but its free. I tried this one out a while ago, and it works fine for simple drawings.

Click to register and download the free version: IMSI Free TurboCAD Downloads

IntelliCAD

This is a fully functional 3D CAD package with full file compatibility to AutoCAD. For the advanced user - you need to be familiar with CAD to use this program.

To download the software, you "join" the IntelliCAD Technology Consortium as a non-commercial member (no "joining" fees). To "join", follow these steps:
1. Go to the web page shown below
2. Select "non-commercial" membership
3. Read & accept the terms & conditions
4. Fill out the registration form
5. Download the software (its about 14 MB, so it takes a while!)
